The Fort Rinella

23/01/18

The Fort Rinella coastal battery is in the village of Kalkara. Built by the British in 1878, it has been rated Malta’s number one attraction.

Once a coastalwatch point used by the British during World War II, the fort is now run by volunteers who bring history back to life with boundless enthusiasm and vigour. This is managed by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna – the Malta Heritage Trust, a voluntary non-governmental organisation whose aim is to save Malta’s heritage sites and buildings at risk through their preservation and management as cultural attractions. Fort Rinella is the only live museum out of 40 sites that the trust manages across the island, relying solely on self-generated revenue and donations to keep it alive.
